Outreach at St. John's

Mission & Outreach

Our Mission & Outreach Commission has many opportunities for our congregation to help people in need in our community and the world.  A great deal of our funding comes from the Nickerson Fund and the Charitable Trust, which have been dedicated to outreach concerns.  From these funds, St. John’s annually contributes to many organizations such as:

A Night's Welcome
H.E.L.P.
Downtown Hampton Child Development Center
Peninsula Habitat for Humanity
Jackson-Feild Homes
and many others.

We also sponsor special dedicated offerings for H.E.L.P.  Financial Aid, food drives to aid the H.E.L.P.  Food Pantry, Mother’s Day offering for Jackson-Feild Homes for Girls, and Habitat for Humanity.  The Mission & Outreach Commission also donates roughly thirty food baskets for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays.  St. John’s Mission & Outreach Commission is active and welcoming of anyone who would like to help reach out to our immediate community and more.

A Night's Welcome: A St. John's Ministry to the Homeless

Joining with other churches around Hampton, St. John's provides lodging for the homeless during the coldest part of the year.  Individuals, families, and organizations are needed to actively participate in one or more of the following ways:

Hospitality Team – Friendly folks to welcome our homeless guests to our parish home.  Members of the hospitality team will help with sign in, meal serving and distribution of bedding.  Hospitality team members are encouraged to join our guests for dinner and assist in making our guests comfortable in our church home.

Dinner Team – Prepare and serve dinner for 40 to 55 guests.  Clean up the St. John's kitchen after the meal.  Disposable dinnerware will be used.

Overnight Team – Two people are needed each night to spend the night.

Breakfast Team – Prepare and serve breakfast for 40 to 55 guests.  Clean up the kitchen and parish house dining area after breakfast.

Monetary Contribution – Although the teams donate most of the food, other items must be purchased (disposable cutlery, napkins, cups, condiments, milk, juice, coffee, etc.).  Your check, payable to St. John's and designated “Night's Welcome,” will provide a portion of this $1,000 in additional expense.

Peninsula Habitat for Humanity

Peninsula Habitat for Humanity

We construct affordable ownership housing locally together with low-income families and the community.  We are committed to building at least ten homes a year.  To accomplish this task means considerable community support.  As Habitat's productivity increases, our base of support needs to be expanded.  We are in need of new companies every year to sponsor a Habitat house!!
